Taxis are a vital service for both residents and visitors of the South Hams and we would like local businesses to have the opportunity to put forward their views if they would like to do so.
South Hams District Council are responsible for setting the maximum taxi fares for Hackney Carriages (the vehicles with a ‘TAXI’ roof sign that can use taxi ranks and be hired on the spot).
We set maximum taxi fares to help ensure that taxi journeys remain fair, reasonable, and transparent for passengers, while also allowing drivers and operators to charge less if they choose to do so. Maximum fares provide a safeguard against excessive charging, help maintain public confidence in the licensed taxi trade, and create consistency for customers across the district.
When reviewing taxi fares, the Council seeks to balance the needs of passengers, who require an affordable and reliable service, with those of the taxi trade, who face increasing operating costs such as fuel, vehicle maintenance, insurance, and licensing requirements.
We are inviting residents, businesses, visitors, taxi drivers, operators, and other interested parties to have their say on the proposed maximum taxi fares.
Please visit out consultation page to view the proposal and have your say:
